Football roundup: Capistrano Valley, Yorba Linda, Sonora open CIF-SS playoffs with exciting wins
The sixth-seeded Cougars (8-3), who played host to their first postseason game since 2018, scored 17 points in the fourth quarter to rally from a 27-20 deficit against the Vikings (8-3).
Capistrano Valley advanced to face Culver City, which beat Ayala 38-28, in the quarterfinals next week. Culver City will be the host team.
High school football playoffs: Capo players among stat leaders and top performers in the first round
Senior Dylan Fingersh booted a 42-yard field goal as time expired to lift Capistrano Valley’s football team past Downey 37-34 in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 4 playoffs Friday.
Capistrano Valley football improves to 7-0 with win over Aliso Niguel
Capistrano Valley scored 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to pull away from Aliso Niguel in a 42-19 nonleague football win Friday at Aliso Niguel High.
The Cougars are 7-0 for the first time since 2017, a season in which the team went 10-0 in the regular season.
“It feels awesome,” Capistrano Valley coach Sean Curtis said. “This is a fun team with a lot of good kids and parents. I’m trying to slow down and enjoy the moment.”

Tommy Acosta, Capistrano Valley: Acosta ran for 181 with four touchdowns in Capo Valley’s 35-18 win over El Toro. The senior quarterback threw for 103 yards with a touchdown pass.

Dual-threat quarterback Tommy Acosta got Capistrano Valley’s football team all the points it needed in the first half and linebacker Jackson Sievers led a defensive surge in the second half in the Cougars’ 38-14 non-league victory over Huntington Beach on Friday at Capistrano Valley High School.

Orange County’s top impact football players for 2023 (Sievers, Walker, Acosta make list)
Orange County high school football will be overflowing with promising players as it returns under the stadium lights this fall. From nationally-ranked Mater Dei to small-school powers such as Laguna Beach, OCVarsity’s annual Hot 150 reflects the county’s abundance of talent. About 30 seniors, for example, have already committed to colleges.

What to expect: Offense has been the Cougars’ strength in recent seasons. Defense could be their forte in 2023. They have four returning starters on offense and four returning starters on defense. “We had to outscore everybody the last four years,” said Capistrano Valley fifth-year coach Sean Curtis. “So we’re excited to see what our team will be like this year.”

Dylan Fingersh, Capistrano Valley, K: The senior attended several college camps over the summer, including one at Cal where he won the field goal competition. He booted eight field goals last season en route to second-team All-County honors.

Tesoro put forth a dominant defensive performance Friday in a 42-10 win over Capistrano Valley in a South Coast League game at Capistrano Valley High.
OCTOBER 10, 2022: Capistrano Valley Cage chosen the OCVarsity Football Student Section of the Week, Oct. 10
Going with a “pink out” theme, the Cage had one of their largest crowds of the season, and they got louder and crazier each time the Cougars added another TD. The Cougars scored 38 unanswered points to beat the Wolverines and end a three-game losing streak.
OCTOBER 8, 2022: Capistrano Valley football overcomes awful start to beat Aliso Niguel
After two turnovers turned into two quick scores for Aliso Niguel’s football team Friday, it looked like it was going to be the Wolverines’ night. But Capistrano Valley held its composure and regrouped to score 38 unanswered points for a 38-22 victory over Aliso Niguel in a nonleague game at Capistrano Valley High.

Thomas Frum had over 300 all-purpose yards and six touchdowns Friday to lead El Toro to a 41-38 upset win over No. 14-ranked Capistrano Valley.

Kukuk passed for 237 yards and rushed for 193 yards as well, while Napoleon had 118 receiving yards as CAPO wins their opening season game Week 0.

Capistrano Valley and Tustin opened the high school football season Thursday night with several new players vying for the spotlight. An established standout had other ideas. Senior dual-threat quarterback Trey Kukuk rushed for 193 yards and four touchdowns — both career highs — and tossed a score to lead the No. 15-ranked Cougars past the No. 17 Tillers 45-13 at Tustin High.
